What happens after you report

Batay sa Agosto 2026Awtomatikong salinPinagmulan: 경찰청42 tingin

Reporting is the start. Knowing what follows makes it easier to handle.

Right after reporting

  1. After a 112 report, police attend the scene or ask you to come in.
  2. You give a victim statement — you can request an interpreter.
  3. Write down the case number — you need it to check progress.
  4. Submit evidence — photos, video, messages, medical certificates.
  5. If you need protection, ask on the spot — smartwatch alarms and temporary lodging exist.

While the investigation runs

  • Take the investigating officer's contact details.
  • You may be called back for further statements.
  • Check progress on the Criminal Justice Portal (kics.go.kr).
  • Register for the notification service to get progress by text.
  • If speaking is hard or you feel threatened, you can request a statement under a pseudonym.

Once there is an outcome

  • The case goes to the prosecution, then to indictment or non-indictment.
  • If you disagree with a non-indictment, you can appeal — consult 132.
  • If indicted, there is a trial and you may attend as a witness.
  • Don't rush a settlement offer — take advice first.
  • Compensation can be claimed civilly, separately from the criminal process.

Where to go

  • 112 police
  • kics.go.kr Criminal Justice Portal (case lookup)
  • 1301 Prosecution Service (case enquiries)
  • 132 Korea Legal Aid Corporation (free legal advice)
  • 1577-1295 Crime Victim Support Centre

Questions people ask

Is interpretation available for statements? Yes — ask for it. Both police and prosecutors can assign an interpreter. See medical-interpreter.

Can I withdraw a report? It depends on the offence. For assault or sexual violence, investigation may continue regardless.

The offender is contacting me. Don't respond directly — tell the investigator. You can request measures such as a restraining order.

It's taking a long time. Several months is common. Track progress with the case number.

Take care

Statements are hard to change later. Say exactly what you remember, and say you don't know when you don't. Before signing, read the statement and have it checked through an interpreter. Never sign a document you don't understand.
