Secure the evidence

Scenes get cleared and memories fade. Record it today.

Photograph now

• Where it happened — the machine, the platform, the floor, the lighting.
• Any missing or broken safety device.
• The injury — with the date visible (next to a newspaper or phone screen).
• The gear you were given — or evidence that you were not.

Witnesses

• Take names and phone numbers. Once you leave the job, contact is lost.
• A short message asking "You saw me get hurt on the ___, didn't you?" leaves a record.

A note of what happened

Write it in order.

1. When (date, time)
2. Where (site name, exact spot)
3. Doing what (including who told you to)
4. How you were injured
5. Who saw it
6. What you did next (who you told, which hospital)

Illness from work counts too

It is not only falls and collisions. Noise-induced hearing loss, back and shoulder conditions, illness from chemicals, conditions from overwork can be recognised as work-related. Record when the symptoms started.
