Step 2 of 6

Record your injuries

Do this now

  1. 1Go to a hospital and get a medical certificate
  2. 2Photograph injuries with the date visible
  3. 3Do not delete abusive or threatening messages

What to prepare

  • Medical certificate
  • Photos of injuries
  • Screenshots of threats or abuse
  • Police report record, if they attended
  • Contacts of witnesses (neighbours, friends)

Records protect you later. Keep them even if they seem useless now.

Go to a hospital

  • Even if the injury looks small, get a medical certificate.
  • Tell the doctor truthfully how it happened. It goes into the record.
  • If cost worries you, ask 1366 or 129 about medical cost support.
  • If there has been sexual violence, a Sunflower Centre provides treatment, counselling and evidence collection in one place.

Photograph it

  • The injuries, from several angles.
  • With the date visible — next to a newspaper or your phone's date display.
  • Bruises change colour over days — photograph them over several days too.
  • Broken objects and a disturbed room are also evidence.

Messages and calls

  • Do not delete threatening or abusive texts, chats or voicemails.
  • Where possible, back them up elsewhere — email them to yourself, or use cloud storage.
  • Your phone may be taken, so store the important ones separately.

If police attended

  • Ask them to record the report.
  • Write down the case number.
  • Even if you do not want punishment at that moment, having the record is better. You may need it later.

Keep it somewhere safe

Do not keep records at home. Leave them with someone you trust, or upload them to email or cloud storage.
