Departure guarantee insurance (E-9 severance)

Departure guarantee insurance is the E-9 equivalent of severance pay. The employer must enrol you and pay in monthly.

Who this covers

• Foreign workers under the Employment Permit System, such as E-9
• Those who worked at a workplace for the qualifying period

What to know

1. Enrolling and paying in are the employer's duty. It is not deducted from your wages.
2. In principle it is paid when you leave the country. This can differ depending on circumstances such as a workplace change.
3. If the amount is less than statutory severance, you can claim the difference.
4. It is paid into your own account. Keep the account open.

Steps

1. Check whether you are enrolled. EPS or the employment centre can tell you.
2. Check periodically that payments are being made.
3. When departure is set, check the claim procedure. Ask the employment centre or EPS.
4. Submit your account details accurately.
5. Confirm the payment.

Questions people ask

My employer never enrolled me. Enrolment is mandatory. Report it to the employment centre and 1350. You can still claim severance even without enrolment.

Can I receive it before departure? There is a rule and there are exceptions. Ask the employment centre once your departure date is set.

I closed my account and left. It becomes hard to receive. Keep the account open before departure, or check alternatives.

The amount is less than I expected. Compare it with statutory severance and claim the difference. Get advice from 1350.

Take care

If a broker asks for your bankbook or a power of attorney to "collect it for you", refuse. You should go through the process yourself.
