Negotiating pay

Batay sa Agosto 2026Awtomatikong salinPinagmulan: 고용노동부2 tingin

The heart of negotiation is not what was said, but whether it is in the contract.

Know before negotiating

  1. The minimum wage — nothing can be set below it. See minimum-wage.
  2. How allowances work — overtime, night and holiday work attract premiums. See overtime-pay.
  3. Weekly holiday allowance and annual leave — consider them when looking at total pay. See weekly-holiday-pay and annual-leave.
  4. Deductions — tax and the four insurances come out. Ask what the take-home amount is. See wage-deductions.
  5. Market rates — you can gauge them from vacancies on Work24 (work24.go.kr).

Questions to ask

  • What is the base salary?
  • How are allowances calculated?
  • What will I actually receive each month?
  • What are the working hours, from when to when?
  • When are the rest days?
  • Will I be enrolled in the four insurances?
  • Is accommodation or food provided, and how much is deducted?

Negotiating tips

  • "Annual salary" and "take-home pay" are different. Confirm both.
  • Don't leave vague wording. "We'll raise it if you do well" is not a contract term.
  • Put everything agreed into the contract. Verbal promises are hard to prove later.
  • Check through an interpreter before signing. See employment-contract.
  • Don't sign in a hurry. It is fine to say you'll think about it overnight.

Where to go

  • 1350 Ministry of Employment and Labour (working conditions, with interpretation)
  • Work24 www.work24.go.kr (gauging rates)
  • 1577-0071 Foreign Workforce Support Centre
  • Local migrant workers' support centres

Questions people ask

I'm worried the offer will be withdrawn if I negotiate. Checking the terms is entirely normal. Simply understanding the contract accurately is already important enough.

They say pay is lower during probation. Probation has standards too. Check with 1350. See minimum-wage.

They offer an all-inclusive wage. Confirm in writing how overtime and night allowances are included. Keep a record of your actual hours.

The terms changed after signing. Treatment differing from the contract is a problem. Gather the contract and payslips and consult 1350.

Take care

Don't start on the basis of "come and work first, we'll talk later". Working conditions must be fixed in writing before you start. Afterwards your bargaining position is far weaker and disputes are much harder.
