The sports voucher
If you want your child to do sport but the cost is a burden, check this.
What it is
A programme supporting sports lesson fees and equipment costs for children and young people from vulnerable households, run under names such as the Sports Class Voucher.
- Lessons in swimming, taekwondo, football, ballet and more
- Some programmes also support equipment purchases
Age and income criteria, amounts and application periods change each year. Always check with your community centre or the programme website.
Steps
- Check the application period — usually recruiting early in the year.
- Apply online or at your community service centre.
- If selected, receive the voucher card.
- Enrol at a participating sports facility and pay with it.
- Use it each month within the set period. Non-use can end the support.

Questions people ask
Do foreign children qualify? It varies by programme. Tell the community centre your child's residence status and check. Separate programmes for multicultural families sometimes exist.
Which facilities accept it? Participating facilities are defined. Check there is one near home before applying.
I wasn't selected. Budgets are limited and there can be competition. Look at local government programmes too.
My child doesn't want to go. Not attending each month can end the support. Ask the facility or department whether the sport can be changed.
Take care
Recruitment windows are short and budgets limited on many of these programmes. Make a habit of asking at your community centre early in the year: "is there any support my child can receive?"
