Raising a child in Korea is something you can learn. You don't have to work it out alone.

  • Parenting classes — age-appropriate care, discipline, communication.
  • Building a bilingual environment — helping children learn both your language and Korean. See bilingual-environment.
  • Support with children's schooling — settling in, homework. See child-education-support.
  • Parent–child relationship programmes — camps and activities.
  • Home visiting services. See visiting-education.

How to apply

  1. Phone or visit a family centre.
  2. Check local programmes on the Danuri portal (liveinkorea.kr).
  3. Complete the application. Most are free.
  4. Say in advance if you need interpretation.
  5. 1577-1366 provides guidance in many languages.

  • Information about your child (age, school)
  • Additional documents depending on the programme

Where to go

Questions people ask

My Korean is weak — can I still support my child's education? Your own language is a real asset to your child. Use bilingual programmes and home visiting services.

I can't read the notices from school. Ask the family centre for interpretation and translation support. See interpretation-service.

My child isn't settling at school. Talk to the family centre and the school counsellor together. Support schemes for multicultural pupils exist. See school-adaptation.

I don't know how to discipline my child. Physical punishment is prohibited by law. Parenting classes teach alternative approaches.

Take care

Physical punishment of children is not permitted in Korea. What you consider discipline can be reported as abuse. When angry, step away for a moment and talk to 1577-1366 or your family centre.
