Scholarships and support for children

Ask the school first — the class teacher or the office is the quickest route.

Types of support

1. Education benefit — activity support for pupils in low-income households. Apply at a community centre or on Bokjiro. See basic-livelihood.
2. Education cost support — meals, after-school class vouchers, internet costs. See school-adaptation.
3. Scholarships for multicultural family children — run by foundations, local governments and companies.
4. Local government scholarships — city, county and district foundations.
5. Private scholarships — corporate foundations, religious bodies, migrant support organisations.

How to apply

1. Ask the school office or class teacher first — most support flows through the school.
2. Apply for the education benefit at a community centre or on Bokjiro (bokjiro.go.kr). See bokjiro.
3. Check with a family centre for scholarships aimed at multicultural children.
4. Check the application windows — many cluster at the start of term.
5. Check the outcome and apply for other support in parallel.

Questions people ask

Communicating with the school is hard without Korean. Ask for interpretation support from a family centre. You can also request it from the school. See interpretation-service.

I don't know where to get the documents. Ask the school office — they will tell you the list and where each is issued. Community centres also advise.

My child isn't settling at school. Separately from scholarships, there are adaptation support programmes. See school-adaptation and psychological-child.

My child arrived in Korea mid-schooling. There is sometimes separate support for mid-entry students. Ask the district education office and a family centre.

Take care

Miss the application window and you wait a whole semester. Always read the notices the school sends at the start of term. If Korean is difficult, read them with a translation app, and ask the class teacher when unsure. Most support is announced through the school.
