Calculating and paying health insurance premiums
How the premium is calculated depends on your enrolment type. The amount changes each year, so this guide does not print figures.
How it is calculated
- Workplace — based on your wage, split with the company.
- Regional — based on income, assets and more, assessed per household.
Check your exact amount with 1577-1000 or at www.nhis.or.kr.
Ways to pay
- Direct debit — safest. Set it up with a bank account or card.
- Paying the bill — bank, convenience store, internet giro.
- Mobile app — check and pay in the NHIS app.
- Virtual account transfer
Steps
- Check the amount charged to you. 1577-1000 or the app.
- Set up direct debit. At a branch or online.
- Check each month that it went through. Failed debits from low balance are common.
- If the amount looks wrong, ask about an adjustment.
What you need

Questions people ask
I have no income but I'm still charged. Regional premiums also reflect assets. If your circumstances changed, ask whether an adjustment is possible.
I can't pay it all at once. Instalment schemes may exist. Don't delay — ask first.
What happens when I leave the country? A settlement is needed. See the nhis-refund-departure guide.
It looks like it was deducted twice from my pay. Take your payslip and check with 1577-1000. Overpayments are refunded.
Take care
A failed debit you don't notice becomes arrears. Turn on text alerts and keep an eye on your balance.
