HIV testing and support
HIV today is a chronic condition managed with medication. Testing is the first step.
Testing
- Anonymous, free testing at public health centres. Many use a number rather than your name.
- Hospitals also test.
- Accurate results require a certain period after the point of risk. Confirm the right timing during consultation.
If the result is positive
- Treatment suppresses the virus. Taking medication consistently lets you live in good health and greatly reduces the risk of transmission.
- Infectious disease departments provide care.
- Medical cost support schemes exist. Ask the health centre.
- Counselling and peer support organisations are available.
After a high-risk exposure
There is preventive medication taken shortly after exposure. Timing matters enormously, so contact an emergency room or infectious disease department without delay.

Questions people ask
Will the result be reported to immigration or my employer? Medical information is protected by law. Anonymous testing leaves no identifying record. If you are worried, ask the health centre before testing.
Can I be tested and treated without residence status? Testing is available anonymously. Treatment and support depend on circumstances, so ask the health centre or a counselling organisation directly. Don't give up alone.
Will I be deported if I'm positive? If you are anxious, get accurate information directly from a health centre or counselling organisation. Asking an institution is safer than relying on internet rumour.
Will my family be told? Not without your consent.
Take care
Putting off testing out of fear of the result is the most dangerous course. Found early and treated, you can stay healthy. Anonymous testing exists — call a health centre without hesitation.
