Rules for putting out rubbish

Batay sa Agosto 2026Awtomatikong salinPinagmulan: 환경부4 tingin

Korea separates rubbish by type. Breaking the rules can bring a fine.

Three streams

  1. General waste — in a pay-as-you-throw bag, sold at convenience stores and supermarkets.
  2. Food waste — a dedicated bag or bin. See food-waste.
  3. Recycling — paper, plastic, cans, glass, vinyl. No bag charge. See recycling.

Key rules

  • Use the bag sold in your own district. Bags from another city are not collected.
  • There are set days and times, usually evening to night. Check your neighbourhood notice.
  • Bulky waste (furniture, appliances) is reported separately. You buy and attach a sticker.
  • Apartments follow the rules of their recycling area.

Steps

  1. Buy pay-as-you-throw bags at a nearby convenience store — "종량제 봉투 주세요".
  2. Put general waste in the bag and tie it.
  3. Separate the recycling.
  4. Put it out on the set day in the set place.
  5. For bulky waste, report to the district office or app and attach the sticker.

Where to go

  • The cleaning and environment department of your city or district
  • Your apartment's management office
  • 120 (Seoul) or your local main number

Questions people ask

Where do I buy the bags? Convenience stores, supermarkets. Ask for "종량제 봉투". They come in several sizes.

What about leftover bags when I move? They cannot be used in another district. Use them up before moving, or ask the local government about refunds.

Can I be fined? Incorrect disposal can bring a fine. Amounts differ by district — check with your district office.

I don't understand the rules. Ask the management office or community centre. Some provide notices in other languages.

Take care

Rubbish is a common source of conflict with neighbours. Keep to the set day and place, and never put waste out without a bag. When unsure, ask a neighbour or the management office first.
