Finding somewhere to stay

Do not think you cannot leave because there is nowhere to go. There is somewhere tonight.

What a shelter is

• It costs nothing.
• The address is not disclosed. The abuser cannot come.
• Some take you with your children. Say on the phone that you have children.
• There are shelters specifically for migrant women, with interpretation and culturally aware counselling.
• Even without ID, protection is often possible first.

How to get there

1. Call 1366 or 1577-1366. Ask for an interpreter.
2. Tell them your situation and they will refer you to a nearby shelter.
3. If travelling is difficult, you can ask for someone to accompany you.
4. If you called the police (112), they can also refer you to a shelter.

Support you can get alongside

• Emergency living and medical costs — 129, your community centre.
• Childcare and schooling — multicultural family support centres.
• Psychological counselling — trauma from violence needs care.
• Interpretation — accompaniment to counselling, hospital, police station.

A protection order

You can apply for an order keeping the abuser away.

• Apply through the police or the court.
• It can bar them from coming near your home, workplace or school, or from contacting you.
• Ask 1366 or 132 how to apply.

What to take when you leave

If there is no time, take your ID, your phone and your children. The rest can be collected later with police accompaniment.
