Transport discounts

Transport is a monthly cost. Taking the discounts makes a real difference.

Available to everyone

• Transfer discounts — tapping your transport card both on and off gives discounted bus↔subway transfers. The most basic and the biggest saving. See public-transport-card.
• Season passes — subway passes and similar, worthwhile with heavy use.
• Public transport refund and mileage schemes — government and local programmes. Names and conditions change often, so check.

Discounts for specific groups

• Child and youth discounts — the card must be registered for the right age band. Without registration you are charged the adult fare.
• Discounts for people with disabilities and persons of national merit
• Multi-child household discounts — varying by local government.

How to check and apply

1. Check your child's transport card is registered as child or youth. This is a very common loss.
2. Ask your community centre whether you qualify for transport discounts.
3. Check your local government website for regional transport schemes.
4. Register and claim refunds on the T-money or local transport card website.

Questions people ask

My child's card charges the adult fare. The age band isn't registered. Register it on the card company's site or at a point of sale. Past use may not be refundable.

Is a season pass worth it? It depends on monthly usage. Count your typical trips and work it out.

The transfer discount isn't applying. Most likely you didn't tap on exit. Buses have readers at the rear door too.

Do foreigners qualify? Many discounts, such as age bands, apply regardless of nationality. Welfare-type discounts depend on eligibility — check at your community centre.

Take care

Always check your child's transport card age registration. Paying adult fares for months because it was never registered is extremely common. Check the card company's site today.
