Support from faith organisations

Regardless of your own faith, migrant support from religious organisations is often genuinely useful.

What they offer

• Services and gatherings in your language — connection with people who share it.
• Interpretation and help with paperwork — accompanying you to offices and hospitals.
• Korean classes — many run them free.
• Free meals and goods — practical help in hard times. See free-meal.
• Referral to legal and labour advice — links to NGOs.
• Shelter — some can arrange temporary accommodation in emergencies.

How to find them

1. Ask your national or language community. See immigrant-community.
2. Ask a family centre or foreign residents' support centre.
3. Check lists of migrant support NGOs. See ngo-support.
4. Approach a local mosque, Catholic church, Protestant church or temple directly.
5. Ask 1577-1366 about local resources.

Whatever your beliefs

• Many organisations offer support without requiring faith.
• You can get information on halal food and prayer spaces. See halal-food.
• They also know about community events at festivals or during Ramadan.

Questions people ask

Do I have to be a believer? Most support people regardless of faith. If you're unsure, ask in advance.

What if they ask me to convert? You may decline. Making support conditional on conversion is not appropriate. Look elsewhere.

I need somewhere to pray. Ask a local religious organisation or community. Some workplaces and universities have spaces too.

I want to learn Korean. Besides religious organisations there are family centres, community centres and the Social Integration Programme. See korean-class-free.

Take care
