Applying for public rental housing

Public rental housing is cheaper than the market, but you can only apply in set windows.

The types (outline)

• Permanent, national, Happy Housing, purchased rental and jeonse rental among others.
• Income and asset criteria and target groups differ by type.
• Jeonse rental works by you finding a property, which the corporation then leases and sub-lets to you cheaply.

Steps

1. Run the self-assessment on MyHome (www.myhome.go.kr).
2. Check announcements on the LH application site (apply.lh.or.kr) or your local urban corporation.
3. Apply within the period once an announcement opens.
4. Go through document screening and eligibility checks.
5. If selected, sign the contract and move in.

For foreign residents

Eligibility depends on residence status. Permanent residence (F-5) and marriage migrant (F-6) status qualify for some types. Check your own status with 1600-1004.

When do announcements appear? There is no fixed schedule. Set alerts on the LH application site and MyHome.

Gathering documents takes time. Application windows are short, so prepare in advance. Income certificates in particular take time to issue.

I can't read the Korean announcement. Ask your community centre or family centre for help and use 1577-1366 interpretation alongside.

I wasn't selected. You can apply again at the next announcement. Competition varies by type, so look at several.
