Services available at a Family Center

Family Centers (multicultural family support centres) are a one-stop service for marriage migrants and their families. Most services are free.

What is offered

1. Korean classes — by level, plus online courses
2. Interpretation and translation — accompaniment to hospitals, schools and offices; phone interpretation
3. Counselling — family conflict, couples, children, mental health
4. Visiting education — Korean lessons, parent education and child guidance at your home
5. Support for children — study help, bilingual programmes, careers
6. Employment support — vocational training, job matching
7. Family programmes — cultural activities, family camps
8. Legal and administrative guidance — referral to the right office

Steps

1. Find your nearest centre. www.liveinkorea.kr or 1577-1366.
2. Call or visit. Many centres offer counselling in your own language.
3. Describe your situation and choose a programme.
4. Fill in the application. Staff will help.
5. Check the schedule and attend.

• Marriage and family documents (depending on the programme)

Questions people ask

Can I use it if I'm not a marriage migrant? It depends on the programme. Many centres also run projects for foreign residents generally. Call and ask first.

Does it cost money? Most services are free or charge only a small fee.

I don't speak Korean. 1577-1366 covers 13 languages, and many centres have interpreters.

My husband or in-laws won't let me go. Using the centre is your right. Tell 1577-1366 about that too when you call.
