Support for children of multicultural families

Support for children of multicultural families comes from schools and Family Centers. Use both.

What is available

1. Korean language support — Korean classes, after-school programmes
2. Study support — basic skills, mentoring
3. School adjustment — counselling, peer relations, multicultural understanding education
4. Bilingual programmes — keeping the parent's language alive
5. Careers and admissions counselling
6. Support for children who arrived mid-schooling — preparatory courses
7. Education cost support — tuition, meals, after-school activities (subject to conditions)

Steps

1. Talk to the class teacher and the multicultural coordinator.
2. Contact a Family Center. 1577-1366 or www.liveinkorea.kr.
3. Choose the programme that matches the child's situation — Korean, study, or emotional support.
4. Apply for education cost support at the school or community centre.
5. Check on your child regularly.

Questions people ask

My child is being teased at school. Tell the class teacher and the school. If it is not resolved, contact the district education office and 1388. Do not let your child simply endure it.

My child can't follow lessons because of Korean. There are Korean classes and after-school programmes. Ask the school.

What about children who arrived mid-schooling? There are preparatory schools and adjustment courses. Ask the district education office.

Take care

A child may be struggling even without saying so. Look at how they feel before their grades. Use 1388 or Family Center counselling if needed.
