Using the Korea Legal Aid Corporation

What they help with
- Legal advice — by phone, in person or online. Free.
- Representation in litigation — available if you meet the criteria.
- Help drafting documents — content-certified letters, complaints and so on.
- Support with settlement and mediation
Common issues: unpaid wages, tenancy and deposits, divorce and custody, traffic accidents, assault, debt.
The process
- Call 132 or visit your nearest branch office.
- Take advice. Explain the facts and your evidence.
- If you need litigation support, apply for legal aid.
- Your eligibility is assessed (there are income and asset criteria).
- If approved, a lawyer is assigned and the case proceeds.

- Alien registration card
- Documents relating to the case (contracts, messages, payslips, medical certificates)
- A chronological summary of events
- Income documents, for a legal aid application

Questions people ask
I don't speak Korean. 1345 and 1577-1366 provide interpretation. Local foreign-resident support centres can also send someone with you.
Is there a fee? Advice is free. Litigation support is free or at cost depending on the eligibility assessment.
Can undocumented residents get advice? Advice on rights violations such as unpaid wages is available. Explain your situation and ask.
How is this different from hiring a lawyer myself? The cost differs greatly. Consult 132 first, then consider a private lawyer if needed.
Take care
Gather your evidence in advance. Contracts, messages, call recordings, payslips and photos are decisive. Limitation periods apply, so claims get harder as time passes — seek advice early.
