Support for international marriage families

Marriage immigrants and their families can access a wide range of support. Start at a family centre.

Main forms of support

• Korean language education, including home visits. See korean-class-free and visiting-education.
• Interpretation and translation — offices, hospitals, schools. See interpretation-service.
• Help with raising children — bilingualism, study support. See bilingual-environment.

How to use it

1. Visit or phone your nearest family centre.
2. Get guidance in your own language on 1577-1366.
3. Check programmes on the Danuri portal (liveinkorea.kr).
4. Apply for what you need — most are free.
5. Check welfare support at your community centre too. See welfare-eligibility-check.

Questions people ask

Does support stop once I take Korean nationality? It varies by programme. Check directly with the family centre. Many continue for members of multicultural families.

My spouse objects to me applying. Many programmes allow you to apply yourself. Explain the situation to the family centre.

I'm divorced — can I still get support? If you have children or meet the criteria, you may remain eligible. Check with 1577-1366. See single-parent-support.

What about my residence status? Check marriage-based residence with 1345 and the immigration office. See marriage-visa-interview.

Take care

If a spouse or relative tells you that "claiming support will cause problems", verify it yourself. Your passport and residence card should stay in your own keeping. If someone else holds them, consult 1577-1366 or 1345.
