Housing support: an overview

If housing is a struggle, don't carry it alone — check public housing support.

Three main routes

1. Public rental housing — supplied by the state, local governments and LH, below market rates. See public-rental-housing.
2. Jeonse deposit loans — low-interest loans to fund a deposit. See jeonse-loan.
3. Rent support — schemes covering part of the monthly rent. See rent-support.

There is also housing benefit (the housing element of basic livelihood security), emergency welfare housing support, and local government programmes.

Checking in one place

The MyHome portal www.myhome.go.kr lets you search housing support schemes and run a self-assessment. By phone: 1600-1004 (MyHome call centre).

For foreign residents

Residence status requirements differ by scheme. Permanent residence (F-5) and marriage migrant (F-6) status open comparatively more options. Always confirm for your own status with MyHome, LH or your community centre. Don't assume you are ineligible.

2. Confirm with 1600-1004 or your community centre whether you can apply on your status.
3. Watch for application notices. Public rental housing is only open in set periods.
4. Prepare the documents and apply.

Questions people ask

Can foreigners get public rental housing? It depends on the scheme and your status. Tell 1600-1004 your status and check.

I can't find a home because I have no deposit. Look at deposit loans and rent support together. In immediate crisis, also check emergency welfare housing support through 129.

I'm afraid of jeonse fraud. Checking the property register before signing, and the fixed date stamp and move-in report, are the key protections. See deposit-protection and real-estate-fraud.

I can't complete the forms in Korean. Community centres, family centres and migrant support centres will help. Use 1577-1366 interpretation alongside.

Take care

Public rental application windows are short. Set alerts on MyHome or the LH application site and prepare documents in advance. Missing a window can mean a long wait for the next.
