Worth knowing

1. Bokjiro (bokjiro.go.kr) — search schemes, simulate eligibility, apply online. See bokjiro.
2. Government24 (gov.kr) — issuing certificates and civil applications. See government-24.
3. Danuri portal (liveinkorea.kr) — information for multicultural families and foreign residents, multilingual. See danuri-portal.
4. NHIS (nhis.or.kr) — premiums, check-ups, eligibility.
5. Work24 (work24.go.kr) — job search, vocational training, unemployment benefit.

Getting ready

• Identity verification is required. Check the phone is in your own name. See phone-verification.
• Many services accept your alien registration number.
• Check for multilingual support, and use a translation app alongside where there is none. See translation-apps.
• Digital certificates or simple authentication are sometimes needed.

How to use them

1. Use Bokjiro's welfare service simulation to see what you may qualify for.
2. Apply online for the relevant schemes, or visit a community centre.
3. Obtain any certificates you need on Government24.
4. Track results and progress in the app.
5. When unsure, call 129 — it is free and they will guide you.

Questions people ask

The app is Korean only. The Danuri portal is multilingual. For others, use a translation app or get help at a community or family centre.

Identity verification fails. The phone usually needs to be in your own name. If it still fails, visit the community centre in person.

Online applications are difficult. You can apply in person at a community centre. Online is not the only route.

I don't know what schemes exist. Bokjiro's simulation and a call to 129 are the quickest ways. See welfare-eligibility-check.

Take care

Anyone charging a fee or asking for your account to "apply for benefits on your behalf" is running a scam. Welfare applications are free and you can make them yourself. Type official addresses yourself — never tap a link that arrives by text. See voice-phishing.
