Preparing for the marriage visa interview

Marriage visa assessment can include an interview. Its purpose is to filter out sham marriages.

What they check

• How the two of you met
• How well you know each other — family, work, daily life
• Whether you can communicate — a shared language. Korean ability requirements may apply.
• Your actual plans and means to live together
• Ability to support yourselves

Detailed requirements change often. Always confirm with 1345 and the relevant mission or immigration office.

How to prepare

1. Go through the answers together, but prepare the truth. Invented stories fall apart quickly.
2. Set out your relationship in chronological order and gather evidence — photos, messages, call records, flight tickets.
3. Check each other's basic details — birthday, family, job, where you live.
4. Be ready to explain how you communicate.
5. Nerves can cause inconsistencies. If you don't know something, saying "I don't know" is better.

What not to do

• Memorising a script written by a broker — the most common cause of failure.
• Submitting false documents — discovery leads to cancellation, prosecution and an entry ban.
• Buying or selling a marriage — plainly a crime.

Questions people ask

Is it a problem if I don't speak Korean? They assess whether you can communicate. There are defined ways to meet the requirement (a Korean test, a shared language) — check with 1345. The KIIP programme also helps. See kiip-program.

There is a big age gap between us. That alone is not a ground for refusal, though you may be asked about it. Explain honestly.

What if we're refused? You can check the reason, address it and reapply, or lodge an objection. See visa-refusal-appeal.

The agency says they will "handle the interview for us". That is fraud or illegal. Refuse and check with 1345.

Take care

A sham marriage is a serious crime that punishes both parties. Even if a broker says "we just need the papers to match", never agree. Discovery brings deportation and a long entry ban. If you are genuinely a couple, preparing the plain truth is the strongest approach.
