KIIP levels and completion

The course is divided into levels, and you must complete each to move on.

Structure (outline)

• Korean language and culture — several levels from the basics.
• Understanding Korean society — basic and advanced courses.
• Placement test — decides which level you start at, with written and oral parts.
• Level, interim and final assessments — taken at the end of each stage.

The number of levels, hours and assessment format change with policy reform. Check the current structure on Socinet.

Conditions for recognised completion

1. Meet the attendance rate.
2. Pass each level's assessment.
3. Finish the final course and you receive a completion certificate.

What the certificate does

• Benefits in nationality procedures, such as exemption from the naturalisation written test
• Recognition of Korean ability for permanent residence (F-5) and the F-2 points system
• Advantages in some residence status procedures

Questions people ask

The placement test put me in a low level. Starting low is often more useful. A solid foundation is what gets you through the next assessment.

I failed a level assessment. You can retake it or repeat the level. Ask your institution.

Is this different from the TOPIK Korean test? Yes, though both can serve as evidence of Korean ability in residence procedures. Ask 1345 which one you need.

I lost my completion certificate. Check on Socinet whether it can be reissued or printed.

Take care

Your completion record stays on your account, so keep your login details safe. You will need it years later for naturalisation or permanent residence. Keep a separate copy of the certificate.
