Fines for late reporting

Foreign residents have several reporting duties, and missing the deadline brings a fine.

Commonly missed reports

• Change of residence — when you move
• Change or addition of workplace — when you change or add jobs
• Extension of stay — before expiry
• Change of passport number — when you get a new passport
• Changes to registration details — name, nationality and so on

Avoiding fines

1. Put the deadlines in your calendar, especially your stay expiry date.
2. Report in the same week you move or change jobs.
3. Some items can be filed from home through HiKorea's e-services.
4. When unsure, ask 1345 — free, in 20 languages.

If you are already late

1. Report as soon as possible. The longer you wait, the worse it gets.
2. If there was a reason, prepare supporting documents — hospitalisation, an accident.
3. When the fine notice arrives, pay within the deadline or submit a statement.

Amounts depend on the type of violation and the delay. Check with 1345 or an immigration office.

Questions people ask

What if I don't pay the fine? It can count against you in procedures such as extension of stay or change of status. Deal with it within the deadline.

I didn't know I had to. Not knowing does not exempt you, though you do get a chance to explain. Report immediately regardless.

My company said they would file it. Where the duty is yours, you must verify it yourself. Don't leave it to the company — confirm it was actually done.

Can I pay in instalments? Ask the immigration office. Depending on your circumstances, a consultation is possible.

Late reporting can count against you in later residence status reviews. The record matters more than the fine itself. Always deal with moves and job changes within the same week.
