There is money owed to you before you go home. Without preparation, you leave it behind.

Settle these before departure

1. Severance pay — you have a right to it if you meet the requirements. See severance-pay.
2. Departure guarantee insurance (severance in nature) — insurance for EPS workers. Check the claim procedure. See severance-departure.
3. Return cost insurance — covers the flight home. See return-cost-insurance.
4. National pension lump-sum refund — claimable depending on your country. 1355. See pension-lump-sum-refund.
5. Outstanding wages and allowances — always settle anything remaining. See unpaid-wages.
6. Health insurance settlement — overpayments can be refunded. See nhis-refund-departure.

Claim requirements and procedures differ by scheme and country. Always confirm with the bodies below.

Pre-departure checklist

• Keep your bank account open — money may be paid in later.
• Leave contact details reachable from your home country with each body.
• Take your contract, payslips and insurance documents with you, and save photos.
• Check the Alien Registration Card return procedure. See arc-return-on-departure.
• Clear unpaid taxes and fines. See tax-clearance-departure.

Questions people ask

Can I still claim after leaving? It depends on the scheme. Applying and confirming before departure is far easier. If you have already left, contact each body.

My company won't pay my severance. File with 1350 before you leave. Once you have gone, the process becomes much harder.

I don't know how to claim the insurance. Get guidance from 1577-0071 and www.eps.go.kr. Support centres will help too.

Can I come back to Korea? Schemes such as re-entry for faithful workers exist. Meeting the requirements means no absconding and no violations. See e9-reentry-program.

Take care

Once your departure date is set, start settling at least a month ahead. Severance and insurance take time to claim and process. Leaving it to the last day means departing without the money. Call 1577-0071 in advance and go through the checklist together.
