Getting permission to change your status
A change of status lets you switch without leaving Korea. Do not begin the new activity before permission is granted.
When it is needed
- Study (D-2) → work (E-7 and similar)
- Job seeking (D-10) → work
- Work → residence (F-2) or permanent residence (F-5)
- Marriage → F-6
- Treatment, litigation and similar circumstances → G-1
Steps
- Check the requirements of the target status. 1345 or HiKorea.
- Prepare the documents. They differ by status.
- Apply online on HiKorea or book a visit.
- Submit documents and pay the fee.
- Check the result. Review takes time.
- Receive the new card once approved.

Questions people ask
When should I apply? While your current period of stay still has time left. After expiry it becomes far harder.
Can I start at the new company before approval? No. That is activity outside your status, bringing penalties and grounds for refusal.
What if it is refused? You may reapply with improvements, keep your current status, or have to leave. Contact 1345 immediately.
What if my stay expires during review? Confirm your application is on file and follow immigration's instructions. Do not decide alone.
Take care
Beware brokers charging large sums to handle the change. You can apply yourself, and false documents lead to cancellation and deportation.
