Reporting theft

Theft is different from loss. It is a crime, so always report it.

Steps

1. Leave the scene as it is. Touching things destroys evidence.
2. Call 112, or visit a nearby police station or police box.
3. List what was taken — what, when, where, how much.
4. Ask them to check CCTV — building, shops, car park.
5. Get the report receipt (case number). You need it for insurance and reissuing documents.
6. If cards or a phone were taken, freeze them immediately.
7. Check progress with 182 or the station handling it.

Questions people ask

I don't speak Korean. Ask 112 for interpretation. You also have the right to request an interpreter at the station.

Can I report without valid status? Protecting the victim comes first when a crime is reported. If worried, go through a support centre.

Money disappeared from my dormitory. Even if you suspect a housemate, do not confront them — report it. A confrontation makes things worse.

Something went missing at work. Tell the company, and report to the police if it is not resolved.

Take care

Always get the report receipt (case number). You need it for insurance, for reissuing your ARC or passport, and for checking later. Photograph the case number and keep it.
