Paying utility bills
Setting up direct debit is the safest way to handle utilities. Accumulated arrears can cut off electricity, gas and water.
The bills
- Electricity — KEPCO
- City gas — your local gas company
- Water — the local government
- Maintenance fee — for apartments and officetels; covers cleaning, security, shared electricity
- Telecom — mobile and internet
- TV licence fee — usually billed with electricity
Ways to pay
- Direct debit — safest, by account or card.
- Mobile apps — each provider's app or your bank app.
- Bank or convenience store — take the bill with you.
- Internet giro — www.giro.or.kr
- Virtual account transfer
Steps
- Check the bill — customer number and amount.
- Set up direct debit through each provider's centre or app.
- Check each month that it went through. Failures from low balance are common.
- If a bill jumps, find out why — leaks, heaters, tariff changes.

Questions people ask
My bill suddenly jumped. Check the meter and look for leaks or heater use. If it seems wrong, you can ask the provider to re-check the reading.
I have accumulated arrears. Left alone, supply is cut. Call each provider and ask about instalment payment. If your situation is hard, also ask about emergency welfare support (129).
I don't understand the maintenance fee items. You can request an itemised statement from the management office. Ask for an explanation if it is unclear.
My gas was cut off in midwinter. Contact the gas company and 129 immediately. Winter heating is a survival issue and support schemes exist.
Take care
Never use candles or makeshift heaters when the electricity or gas is off. These are the leading causes of fire and carbon monoxide poisoning. If money is the problem, call 129 first.
