Setting up electricity, gas and water
Moving means transferring the utility accounts. Otherwise you get the previous tenant's bills, or supply is cut.
The three
- Electricity — KEPCO 123. Call on moving day to transfer the account and request a meter reading.
- City gas — your local gas company. Connected after a safety inspection, so book in advance. Check the stove and boiler connections.
- Water — the local waterworks. City or district office, or 120 (Seoul) / the local main number.
Steps
- Book the transfers before moving.
- Photograph the meter readings on moving day. This is the basis for splitting bills with the previous tenant.
- Call each provider to transfer the account.
- Book the gas engineer's visit. Using gas without it is dangerous.
- Set up direct debit. The surest way to avoid arrears.
What you need
- Alien Registration Card
- Lease contract
- Meter photos (moving day)
- A bank account in your name (direct debit)
- Customer number (on the bill)
Where to go
- 123 KEPCO (electricity)
- Your local city gas company (the number is on the bill)
- The waterworks department of your city or district · 120 (Seoul)
- 1345 · 1577-1366 interpretation
Questions people ask
I smell gas. Open the windows and get outside immediately. Do not light anything, use switches or your phone. From outside, call 119 and the gas company.
The boiler won't turn on. The gas may not be connected or a valve is closed. Ask the gas company. Do not dismantle it yourself.
I received the previous tenant's bill. Request a settlement based on the meter photo and your move-in date. The moving-day photo matters.
The electricity suddenly cut out. It may be arrears or a tripped breaker. Ask 123.
Take care
Never use gas without the safety inspection. Connecting hoses yourself or reusing the previous tenant's equipment is dangerous. In winter, heaters in sealed rooms carry a carbon monoxide risk.
