Traffic fines and penalties

Traffic violations are handled either by camera enforcement or on the spot.

Two types

• Administrative fine (과태료) — issued to the vehicle owner when caught by camera. The driver is not identified. No penalty points.
• Penalty charge (범칙금) — issued by police on the spot to the driver. Penalty points may apply.

Steps

1. Read the notice — it states the date, place and nature of the violation.
2. Check online at e-Fine (www.efine.go.kr) for your violations and unpaid amounts.
3. Pay within the deadline — virtual account, card, bank or app.
4. If you disagree, submit a statement. The notice gives the deadline and method.

If you don't pay

• Surcharges are added.
• The vehicle can be seized or the plates removed.
• Accumulated unpaid fines can cause problems in departure and residence procedures.

The notice is in Korean and I can't read it. Check the violation on e-Fine and enquire through 1345 or 1577-1366 interpretation.

I sold the car but the fines still come to me. The registration was never transferred. Check with the buyer and the vehicle registration office immediately. See car-purchase.

I wasn't the one driving. Administrative fines fall on the owner. Identifying the actual driver can convert it to a penalty charge. Ask the police station.

What about parking violations? Those are issued by the local government. Ask your city or district office.

Take care

Leaving fines unpaid can create disadvantages in residence-related procedures. Even small amounts should be settled within the deadline. Make a habit of checking e-Fine regularly.
