Using the post office

Korean post offices handle mail and parcels, and banking such as deposits and transfers.

What they do

• Mail — letters, registered post, certified content mail. See landlord-dispute.
• Domestic parcels (Korea Post delivery)

• Post office banking — deposits, transfers, insurance. Usable like a bank account.
• Some administrative services

How to use one

1. They open weekday daytimes only — generally 9am to 6pm, varying by branch. Check first.
2. Take a number. Mail and banking counters are separate.
3. International sending requires forms. Write the address in English beforehand.
4. Scales and packaging can be bought at the post office.

Sending certified content mail (내용증명)

An official document used in disputes with landlords or employers.

1. Prepare three identical copies — for you, the other party and the post office.
2. Ask the post office to send it as 내용증명.
3. Keep the receipt and your copy safely. They form the basis of legal process.
4. If writing it is difficult, ask 132 (Legal Aid) or a family centre for help.

Questions people ask

Can I use it without Korean? Use a translation app alongside. Writing the destination address on paper in advance makes it far easier.

Can I open a post office account? Yes, with an Alien Registration Card. Required documents vary slightly by branch, so ask in advance. See bank-account.

Are they open at weekends? Generally weekdays only. Some airport and special branches differ. Check the website.

What's the difference between registered and ordinary post? Registered post leaves a delivery record and confirms receipt. Always send important documents by registered post.

Take care

Always send important documents — contract termination, objections, deposit return demands — by registered or certified content mail. Ordinary post leaves no proof you sent it, which weakens your position in any later dispute.
