Mobile phone identity verification

Banks, government offices and shopping sites all ask for "mobile identity verification". The phone must be in your own name.

Where it is needed

• Bank apps and opening accounts
• Government services such as Gov24 and HiKorea
• Online shopping and simple payments
• Hospital bookings and various applications

Steps

1. Get a phone line in your own name, using your Alien Registration Card.
2. Choose your carrier on the verification screen. For an MVNO, choose the "알뜰폰" option.
3. Enter your name, date of birth, gender, registration number and phone number.
4. Enter the code sent by text.
5. If it fails, recheck the name spelling and registration number.

What you need

• A phone in your own name
• Alien Registration Card
• The name and date of birth held by the carrier must match your card

• Your carrier's customer centre (to check registered details)
• 1335 Korea Communications Commission
• 1345 Immigration Contact Center
• The customer centre of the service you are using

Questions people ask

Verification keeps failing. Most often the name spelling held by the carrier (letters, spacing) differs from your card. Call the carrier and align the details.

I use a phone in my company's or a friend's name. Verification will not work. To use banking and government services you need a line in your own name.

My registration number changed. Tell the carrier and each service.

What if I have no phone? Some services accept a joint or financial certificate, or in-person ID checks. See the pass-app guide.

Take care

Using someone else's line is risky. If they cancel it you lose every verification and account tied to it, and if the line is used criminally the problem grows. Always register in your own name.
