Laundries and coin laundrettes

Bedding and winter clothes suit the laundrette; suits and coats suit the cleaner.

Two options

1. Local dry cleaners — dry cleaning for suits, coats and knitwear, plus alterations. You leave items and collect them days later.
2. Coin laundrettes — often open 24 hours, with machines you operate yourself. Ideal for bedding and bulky loads.

Using a dry cleaner

• Take the receipt when you hand items in. Keep it safe.
• Point out stains in advance — saying what was spilled and where changes the treatment.
• Confirm the collection date.
• For expensive garments, photograph the condition beforehand — it helps in a dispute.

Using a coin laundrette

1. Choose the machine size — bedding needs a large one.
2. Pay by coin, card or app.
3. Detergent is often dispensed automatically; some places require you to buy it.
4. Dryers are paid for separately.
5. Remove your load promptly — others are waiting.

If something goes wrong

Can I wash bedding at home? Not easily in a domestic machine. Use a large machine at a coin laundrette.

How do I know if something needs dry cleaning? Check the label inside the garment. If it says no machine washing, take it to a cleaner.

I don't know how to use the laundrette machines. Machines usually have pictorial instructions. Read them with a translation app, or ask staff or another user.

Take care

Collect items promptly. Leaving them long can incur storage charges or risk loss. Losing the receipt makes collection troublesome. For expensive garments, photograph their condition before handing them over.
