Signing up for Korean apps (identity verification)

"Verification won't work" almost always comes down to whose name the phone is in.

What verification requires

1. A Korean phone in your own name — the crucial point. A phone in someone else's name will not verify. See phone-verification.
2. Your alien registration card — verification uses the registration number.
3. Your details registered accurately with the carrier — the spelling must match the card.
4. Simple authentication or a digital certificate — required by some services.

When it fails, check

• Is the phone in your own name? If not, you need a transfer or a new line.
• Does the name spelling match your residence card? Ask the carrier to correct it.
• Is the registration number correct?
• Is it a prepaid phone? Some services restrict verification on prepaid lines.
• Tell the carrier's call centre "verification isn't working" and they will identify the cause.

Using services without verification

• Visit a community centre or the agency in person — online is not the only route.
• Submit an offline application form.
• Application by a family member or acquaintance — requirements such as a power of attorney apply; check with the agency.
• Multilingual advice — 1345 and 1577-1366 can suggest alternatives.

I'm using a phone in a friend's name. Verification won't work, and you have little protection if something goes wrong. Change it to your own name. Lending a name also risks being used for crime. See personal-info-protection.

My name appears differently from my card. The carrier must correct it. Take your passport and residence card.

The verification text never arrives. Check the spam folder and ask the carrier whether messages are being blocked.

Take care

Never lend your name to anyone. Phones and accounts opened in another's name are criminal, and the named person is prosecuted. Never share a verification code — banks and agencies never ask for one. See voice-phishing.
