Understanding Korean addresses

Korea's official system is the road name address. Once you know the order it is simple.

Road name address structure

City/province → city/county/district → road name → building number → detail (unit)

Example: Seoul, Gangnam-gu, Teheran-ro 123, Building 456 Unit 789

• Road name — ending in "-ro", "-gil" or "-daero"
• Building number — the number after the road name
• Detail — apartment building and unit number, floor

Lot number addresses (the old system)

The older "○○-dong 123-45" format is still used, particularly in property documents such as registers. Use road name addresses for deliveries and administrative forms.

Postcodes

Five digits. Look them up by address at juso.go.kr.

Practical tips

1. Note your address in both Korean and English.
2. Note the building entrance code too — it helps with deliveries and visitors.
3. You must state the address accurately when calling 119 or 112. Save it in your phone notes.
4. When you move, change the address everywhere it is registered. See moving-in.

How do I write my address in English? Enter the Korean address at juso.go.kr and it converts it to English. Copy that as-is.

Should I use the old lot number or the new road name? Road name addresses for administration and delivery. Property documents show the lot number as well.

How do I write apartment building and unit numbers? After the road name address, add a comma and write them as "101동 202호".

Take care

Save your home address in both Korean and English on your phone right now. Rescue is sometimes delayed because people cannot give an address in an emergency. Writing it on paper for your wallet is better still.
