Grocery shopping (supermarkets and markets)
Where you shop makes a real difference to price and convenience.
Where to shop
- Hypermarkets — E-Mart, Homeplus, Lotte Mart. Wide range and stable prices. Some branches have mandatory closing days — check.
- Local and chain supermarkets — close and convenient.
- Traditional markets — fresher and cheaper vegetables, fruit and fish. Cash can be advantageous at some stalls.
- Online grocery — including dawn delivery. Good for heavy items. See online-shopping.
- Foreign grocery shops — ingredients from home. See home-country-food.
Worth knowing
- Buy-one-get-one offers are common. Check the dates.
- End-of-day discounts — fresh food is often reduced late in the evening.
- Membership cards and apps bring discounts.
- Bring a shopping bag. Plastic bags are charged.
- Refunds and exchanges need the receipt. Don't throw receipts away.
Reading labels
- Sell-by / use-by dates — the labelling can differ. Always check the date.
- Country of origin is marked as domestic or imported.
- Check the allergen labelling.
- Halal and vegetarian status needs separate verification. See halal-food.

Questions people ask
I can't read Korean labels. Use a translation app camera. If you have allergies, always translate and check the ingredient list.
I bought something spoiled. Take the receipt and the product back to the store. If it isn't resolved, consult 1372.
Can I haggle at the market? It is common at traditional markets, though don't push unreasonably.
Which day is cheapest? It varies by store. Check offers in the app or leaflets.
Take care
Beware places that gather people with "free gifts" and then sell to them. They frequently target older people with expensive health foods. If you sign a contract there is a cooling-off period — consult 1372 immediately.
