Step 5 of 6

If you receive a notice

Do this now

  1. 1Check the date and deadline on the notice first
  2. 2Apply for free legal advice on 132
  3. 3Respond within the deadline

What to prepare

  • The original notice
  • The envelope (to show the date received)
  • All related documents
  • An interpreter request
  • A consultation appointment

If you have a notice, the deadline matters most. Check it today.

Look at these first

  1. What kind of notice — refusal, cancellation, a summons; the response differs.
  2. Dates — when it was issued, and when you received it.
  3. The deadline — if it says "within ___ days," that is the key line.
  4. The reason — it states why the decision was made.

If you cannot follow it, call 1345 and read the notice to them.

Do not miss the deadline

Procedures for contesting an administrative decision have deadlines. Once passed, you cannot contest it, right or wrong.

On the day the notice arrives, check the deadline first and book a consultation that same day.

Ways to contest

  • Objection — ask the deciding body to reconsider.
  • Administrative appeal — apply to a separate body.
  • Administrative litigation — take it to court.

Which one fits depends on the case. Decide it through a consultation.

Free help

  • Korea Legal Aid Corporation, 132 — free advice, interpreter available.
  • Migrant support organisations — accompaniment and help with the paperwork.
  • 1345 — help understanding the notice.

If you are told to attend

  • Failing to turn up without explanation counts against you. If you cannot go, call ahead.
  • You can request an interpreter.
  • Take advice before you go. Going with your points organised is not the same as going unprepared.
  • Do not sign a document you do not understand.

    gihan-i eonjekkaji-ingayo?

    What is the deadline?

Take care

Don't throw away or hide the notice. The date you received it sets the deadline. Keep the envelope too.
