Step 4 of 6

Your residence status

Do this now

  1. 1"I'll cancel your visa" is not how it works
  2. 2Consult 1345 and a migrant women's organisation
  3. 3Keep a record of the advice you receive

What to prepare

  • Residence card
  • Marriage documents, if available
  • Documents about your children, if any
  • Evidence of the violence (certificates, police records)
  • Contact details of advice services

"I can cancel your visa" is a threat abusers commonly use.

Residence status is not something a spouse can remove at will. The immigration authorities decide.

What to know

  • Where a marriage ends because of violence, there are routes to continue your stay.
  • There are provisions that consider a marriage ending through no fault of your own.
  • There are also provisions that consider raising your children.
  • But requirements and documents differ with each person's situation. You must get advice.

We cannot tell you here that "this will work." The answer for your situation comes from a consultation.

Where to ask

  • 1345 — Immigration Contact Centre, multilingual.
  • 1577-1366 — Danuri Call Centre, 13 languages, familiar with migrant women's situations.
  • Migrant women's rights organisations — they handle many similar cases.
  • Korea Legal Aid Corporation, 132 — free legal advice.

Ask more than one place, not just one.

Worth doing now

  • Collect evidence of the violence. Certificates, police records and counselling records matter later.
  • Note the date and content of each consultation.
  • Keep a copy of your residence card somewhere safe — it can be taken from you.
  • If it has been taken, say so in your consultation.

Beware anyone asking for money

Someone offering to "fix your visa problem" for a fee is a broker. Every service listed above is free.
