Finding halal and vegetarian food
Halal and vegetarian options are growing in Korea — but checking ingredients is on you.
Where to find it
- Specialist halal shops — in areas with many foreign residents such as Itaewon, Ansan and Daegu.
- Online halal shops
- The imported food section of hypermarkets
- Shops near mosques — around the Seoul Central Mosque and others
- Vegetarian shops and restaurants — increasingly common in large cities.
Korea Tourism Organization and others publish halal and vegetarian restaurant information. Search for "Muslim-friendly restaurants".
Checking ingredients
Pork-derived ingredients appear in Korean food in unexpected places.
- Gelatine — jelly, yoghurt, medicine capsules
- Lard — snacks, instant noodles
- Broth and seasoning — beef and pork bone stock
- Alcohol — sauces, bread, confectionery
- Kimchi — often contains fermented seafood (shrimp, anchovy).
Get into the habit of photographing ingredient lists with a translation app.
Asking at a restaurant
- "돼지고기 들어가요?" — does it contain pork?
- "고기 빼고 주세요" — please leave out the meat
- "채소만 있는 메뉴 있어요?" — do you have a vegetables-only dish?
Showing a written note or translation app screen is the surest approach.

Questions people ask
How do I verify halal certification? Look for a certification mark on the packaging. Several certifying bodies exist, so ask the seller directly if unsure.
School meals include pork. Explain your religious or health reasons to the school and discuss it. Some schools can provide alternatives.
What about hospital meals? Telling the nutrition department on admission often allows adjustment. Request it in advance.
Is it in instant noodles and snacks too? It can be. Always check the ingredient list.
Take care
Don't rely on "there's no meat in it". It is often present as broth or seasoning. If it matters to you, check the ingredient list yourself or use specialist shops.
